Helga is an extraordinary figure. Long, gentle hair, fine clothing, and a soft voice indicates grace and refinement. Step onto the battlefield, and Helga's true nature emerges.
She wields a long lance as sharp as any for tearing down defensive lines. On horseback, she presses enemies on wings of terror. If you are so unlucky as to become her enemy, pray that this Valkyrie may have mercy on your soul.
Adventurer Quinn may be the only person in town who dares to call himself her equal (and coincidentally has made his feelings for her known countless times). Her rejections have driven him crazy. His latest musing? "I must see which of us is stronger, myself or Helga, on the battlefield or off it! Or I shall never depart this town!"
Helga hails from a Viking tribe in the northlands. Her parents were well-respected warriors and she learned how to ride a moose even as a young girl.
She had already showed great talent for combat at a young age, but also something else too: a refusal to accept the warlike ways of her ancestors. When hunting, Helga keenly felt that the beauty of nature and sanctity of life should not be disturbed lightly or easily. She began to doubt: how could anything be more important than living at peace with others?
Helga's growing independence clashed frequently with tribal tradition. It was too much: constant plundering. Constant oppression.
Helga's rage publicly exploded at the warchief one day after he announced a new campaign. It was a humiliation with a price to pay for both of them.
Judgment was rendered against Helga: she would have to survive a duel to the death against the warchief's champion, the strongest of their tribe. It was supposed to be an execution. Helga surprised everyone by slaying their leader's anointed. Victory bought survival. She was allowed to leave on mooseback. So she left her only home and vanished from the tribe forevermore.
Helga's act of rebellion stirred up something deep in the warchief's heart. What if Helga's resistance had been the start of a greater movement? Even the beginnings of a coup? If warriors were allowed to make their own decisions about when and where to go to war, then the authority of the warchief would come into question. Then it was only a matter of time until their tribe would be conquered by other Vikings with greater unity of purpose and turned into slaves.
The warchief began a great cleansing after Helga's departure. Warriors who did not show absolute loyalty were driven out mercilessly. It took 10 years, but at the end the warchief was able to secure for himself the fearsome title of Viking King.
Yet that one act of resistance from Helga still burns in the Viking King's heart. But wait, what news has the scout brought today? A familiar lady-warrior in traditional garb has just been sighted in the new lands? A new campaign, it seems, must soon begin.
