The patrons of Petra's local gambling hole still have a hard time believing anyone, let alone a 14-year-old girl, could empty their collective pockets and almost bankrupt the casino. But that is exactly what happened.
14 consecutive sixes over as many rolls? Petra was just getting warmed-up. Amadeus ambled over to the table and sacrificed two rounds to see if he could figure out the trick, for trick there must be. The house could accept the idea of a lucky streak up to a certain point. Obvious cheating demanded a response even if no sleight-of-hand could be identified. "Take her to the Governor!" the crowd jeered.
But something had been bothering Marlin. He suddenly realized where he had seen the distinctive marker on Petra's outfit before: "She's a royal fortune-teller!" Immediate confusion followed. Why was an imperial fortune-teller here? Was that allowed?
The royal diviners are a secretive guild employed exclusively by the royal family. The ability to foresee the future, however imperfectly, is an important tool that cannot be shared. For this reason Guild examination is notoriously strict. Entrants have but one chance. Failure means a lifetime ban from the divination arts.
There as many types of divination as personal preferences. Some prefer to see a future in the stars, others cards, others find special insight in the dancing flames of a fire. Generally, alternatives to tarot readings were tolerated but not encouraged in King's Castle, the Chief Diviner being a huge fan of convenient, portable, reusable card decks.
So great is the esteem given the Diviners Guild their foreseers were left pretty much alone when Rebels occupied King's Castle and drove out most of the palace attendants. Clearly, whatever fortunes they had foretold did not include harsh treatment by the Rebels in the chaos.
The Diviners Guild was still conducting examinations when the Rebel leader himself, General Cesares, took a personal interest. Petra took the Examinee's Stand under the watchful eyes of the Chief Diviner and General. Yet when the answers were revealed, it was the Chief Diviner's skill that was called into question, not hers.
Let it never be said General Cesares is blind to opportunity. He immediately ordered Petra into the throne room for a closed consultation. Petra's fellow Guild members worried over her fate for an anxious few hours, but it was the General who looked fearful when he emerged. He swiftly ordered his guard to begin a general retreat from King's Castle and the surrounding region. Petra took one look at her colleagues, mumbled something about "Do not be anxious over days set in motion long ago" and promptly left the castle in the same direction.
That was the last the royal court would see or care of Petra, at least in her role as an official diviner.
Is Petra the Great Diviner eccentric purely because of her ability to foresee the future? Whatever the reason, if Petra tells you to stay clear from garlic three days before seeking your reading, and that unless she consumes olive oil first thing in the morning and an extremely rich meal immediately prior nothing will succeed, that is what must be done, no questions asked.
Fortune-telling is fairly easy to verify. Petra is not called the "Great Diviner" for nothing, nor have any of her predictions unambiguously failed.
